C-Drama Review: Meet Yourself

Happy New Year 2025! 💫

Hey guys, so I came across this C-drama, "Meet Yourself" starring Liu Yi Fei and Li Xian last year and I really enjoyed watching this series. I have not watched many C-dramas to date but this drama is definitely one of my all-time favourite C-drama that I would highly recommend if you enjoy watching meaningful and healing slice-of-life, romance genre dramas!

The story is about Xu Hong Dou (portrayed by Liu Yi Fei), a workaholic who has been working non-stop as a hotel manager at a large hotel chain in Beijing. After losing her best friend who unexpectedly died from cancer one day, her life came to a sudden standstill and she could no longer focus on work. She then decides to quit her job in the city and move to a small village called "Yun Miao" which is located in Dali, Yun Nan province. She was supposed to come to this village with her best friend but they ended up not going and she wanted to fulfil her best friend's wish. At the village, she meets Xie Zhi Yao (portrayed by Li Xian), who left the city and returned to his hometown to start a tourism business to promote "Yun Miao" village. Zhi Yao lives with his grandmother and he is well-known as the 'village boss' where everyone in the village goes to him when they have a problem and he is liked by everyone in the village. During her time at the village, Hong Dou also meets other people who lives in the same B&B with her. There's Lin Na, also known as "Nana", a small town barista who works part-time at the village cafe and who sings well; Mr. Ma, who used to be a businessman who now meditates in the courtyard every morning; Youyu, a musician who works part time at a bar and is often misunderstood by the residents; and Qingtian, an internet writer who doesn't enjoy socialising and moved here to escape the pressure from her family. There's also Xie Xiao Chun, a divorcee who is the owner of the B&B and also Zhi Yao's cousin who is helping him to run the tourism business. As Hong Dou spends time getting to know them, she learns of the different struggles they are facing, and through her interactions with Zhi Yao and everyone at the village including his grandmother, Hong Dou begins to realise the true meaning and way of life and finds love in an unexpected place.

Thoughts on the drama...

What I really liked about this drama is how it portrays everyday life and the struggles everyone faces in a very realistic way. I think the best dramas are those where each character has their own story to tell and where the story is not just focused on the two main leads. I liked how there is character development as the each characters overcome their own challenges. For example, Hong Dou begins to learn the true meaning of life as she adjusts to the slow-paced and simple life in the village, after having lived a very busy life in the city. I also liked how the story highlighted real-life problems like how people in the village are leaving to the city to work because there is not enough for them to do in the village, and how the children are often separated by their parents and are left to grow up with their grandparents in the village while their parents are working hard to earn money in the city. Although the drama is slightly slow-paced, this slice-of-life drama despicts the everyday life of the villagers as they find joy in small moments as they live their lives. However, the series didn't feel draggy or boring and I really enjoyed watching every episode. The acting of the cast was superb and the chemistry between Liu Yi Fei and Li Xian, and the rest of the cast was amazing! And finally, what I absolutely enjoy about C-dramas is their realistic portrayal of life, relationships, family and also important life lessons that are useful in navigating everyday life!
