J-Drama Review: Kimi ga Kokoro wo Kuretakara (The Gift of Your Heart)

Hey guys, so I just recently finished watching another Japanese drama, Kimi ga Kokoro wo Kuretakara (The Gift of Your Heart) starring Mei Nagano and Yuki Yamada, and it was suprisingly really good! I have been a fan of Mei Nagano since I first watched her in a Japanese Movie called "You Shine in the Moonlight Lit", and I had to check out this drama when I found out that she was the female lead!

This story is about Aihara Ame (portrayed by Mei Nagano), who is someone who doesn't have much confidence in herself due to her traumatic childhood and she does not like how her name, Ame, which means rain, feels gloomy just like how her life is. It wasn't until one day when she met Asano Taiyo (portrayed by Yuki Yamada), who attends the same high school as her, that her life began to be filled with joy and happiness. Taiyo's family owns a fireworks company in Nagasaki and his dream is to become a pyrotechnician and to succeed his family business, which is a promise he made to his late mother.

After offering to share a red umbrella on a raining afternoon, Ame and Taiyo became good friends and Ame started to open herself up to Taiyo who always brought happiness into Ame's dull life. Although they both had feelings for each other, they did not tell each other how they felt and Ame went to Tokyo after graduating high school to fulfil her dreams of becoming a patissier. Before leaving, Ame and Taiyo made a promise to each other that Ame would achieve her dreams of becoming a patissier and Taiyo would become a pyrotechnician and show her the fireworks he makes 8 years later.

8 years have passed, and although Ame has achieved her dreams of becoming a patissier, she suffers from stress and low-esteem as a result of working at a famous bakery in Tokyo. After being fired from her job one day, she decides to return to Nagasaki. There, she meets Taiyo again after 8 years, and she still has feelings for him. However, Taiyo got into a car accident one day. When he was at the brink of death, a mysterious man suddenly appeared in front of Ame and offered her a miracle to save Taiyo's life. In return, she has to give her heart to him and she will lose all five senses (sight, taste, smell, touch and hearing) one by one in the next three months. Without hesistating, Ame agrees to accept the miracle to save Taiyo's life. Without letting Taiyo know about the miracle, Ame initially tried to distance herself from Taiyo. However, her plan didn't work and Taiyo ended up finding out that she was going to lose her five senses. In the end, Ame decides to spend her remaining days with Taiyo.

*Spoilers Alert*

Thoughts on the drama....

What I really liked about this drama is the interesting storyline and how the story gets better as you watch the drama. First of all, the cast is amazing, from the main leads to the other characters such as Ame's grandmother, Taiyo's sister, and many more! I really like how each characters have their own story to tell, not just the main characters, including the two guides and I really liked the plot twist about Chaiki being Taiyo's late mother. Another thing that got me hooked to the drama is how each episode keeps you guessing which sense Ame would lose next. The plot twist in the final episode was pretty unexpected but gave it a bittersweet ending. It was nice to see Ame regaining all her five senses and how she finally had the courage to pursue her dreams of becoming a patissier. I really liked how she ended up opening her own bakery and naming it "Rain and Sun", which means "Ame and Taiyo" in Japanese. However, it was heartbreaking to learn that Taiyo decided to accept his fate because to him, the time they had spent together was enough for him and he couldn't bear to lose Ame, in return for accepting her heart which is the miracle. Overall, this drama is slightly slow paced but very meaningful as it teaches you important life lessons such as how we should always appreciate what you have in life, because if you don't, you will regret it once you lose it, just like how Ame learns an important lesson after losing each sense. Although her character started off as someone who has very low self-esteem, she grew to become more confident and positive after accepting her fate and the choice she made. I would definitely recommend watching this drama if you enjoy watching melodrama that is slow-paced but meaningful!
