K-Drama Review: Bo-Ra! Deborah

Hey guys, it has been a while and I can't believe it's been more than a year since I last wrote a review. I recently came across this new K-drama called "Bo-Ra! Deborah" which was pretty good and decided to share a review of this drama!

Bo-Ra! Deborah is a 16-episode ENA drama starring Yoo In Na, Yoon Hyun Min, Joo Sang Wook, Kim So Jin, 2PM Chan Sung and many more! The story is about a successful writer (pen name: Deborah) and dating coach, Yeon Bo Ra (portrayed by actress Yoo In Na) whose life turns upside down when she finds out that her long-time boyfriend, Ju Wan (portrayed by actor 2PM Chan Sung) has been cheating on her. Bo-Ra has been expecting a marriage proposal from her CEO boyfriend and decided to muster up her courage to propose to him herself. While she was on the way to propose to her boyfriend, she unexpectedly caught him cheating and they ended up breaking up. As a famous dating coach, she has experience in dealing with love but not with heartbreak and the story continues to unfold as Bo Ra learns how to get back up and move on from her failed relationship.

On the other hand, Lee Soo Hyuk (portrayed by actor Yoon Hyun Min), is a publishing planner who does not know how to express his feelings. While preparing to propose to his long-time girlfriend, she told him that she wanted to break up and he ended up not taking out the ring he bought to propose. By chance, Soo Hyuk and Bo Ra end up getting entangled with each other on several occasions and they ended up working together as writer and publisher after an incident that ruined Deborah's career as a well-known dating coach and writer. Although they were at loggerheads at the beginning and hated each other, their relationship began to blossom into something more as they continue to work together and get entangled with each other's personal lives.

Would Bo Ra finally find the love she's been looking for? Would Soo Hyuk, on the other hand, be finally able to express his feelings to the woman he truly loves?

Thoughts on the drama...

It's been a pretty long time since I came across a K-drama that I really enjoy watching and look forward to the next episode, and this drama somehow filled the spot. To be honest, I wasn't really drawn to this drama at the start until about the 5th episode. The chemistry between the main leads is really good as they somehow look good together. As veteran K-stars, their acting skills were superb too! I first watched Yoo In Na in "Queen In Hyun's Man" which was really good and I also really liked her character in "Goblin". I have to say her dramas are usually quite good, including this one! While I'm not usually a fan of Yoon Hyun Min's drama, I quite liked his portrayal of Soo Hyuk in this drama and I might start watching some of his older dramas after this! As for the overall theme of this drama, I really liked how the writer shows us how Bo Ra goes through a breakup in a pretty realistic way. As viewers, we got a glimpse of how she went through anger, grief, and sadness as she overcame her heartbreak, and she finally opened her heart again and found herself falling for Soo Hyuk.

There is a quote in this drama that perfectly describes the relationship between Bo Ra and Soo Hyuk:

Even if he doesn’t care for the value of diamonds if he recognizes that it is a universal symbol of love, he will willingly buy it and place it on your finger.

At the beginning of the drama, there was a scene where Soo Hyuk went to buy a diamond ring to propose to his ex-girlfriend (which is also where he unexpectedly bumped into Bo Ra) but he ended up not taking the ring out. On the contrary, Soo Hyuk, who usually doesn't express his feelings to others including his ex-girlfriend, did a grand gesture of confessing to Bo Ra in the final episode because he was afraid of losing her after realizing that he too, had feelings for Bo Ra. This shows that perhaps he wasn't truly in love with his ex-girlfriend and didn't have the courage of expressing his feelings. I also really liked how the writer also showed us how each character in this drama was at a different stage in their relationship. For example, Bo Ra's best friend Yoo Jung, has been married for years, while the CEO of a publishing company, Mr Han is divorced and finds love at an unexpected place, and her younger sister, Bo-Mi who just started to date her boyfriend. Another thing that I really liked about this drama is how there were character developments for not only the main leads (which were quite significant!) but also for the other characters as well which is somethinging that is really nice to watch. The drama also didn't seem draggy towards the end (like most K-dramas) and I think the writer did a great job towards the end of the drama.  As for one downside, I didn't really like how her ex-boyfriend tried to get back with Bo-ra in the last few episodes after what he did to her, but I'm super glad that Bo-ra chose to follow her heart until the end to be with Soo Hyuk! Overall, this was a light and heartwarming drama that is worth watching if you're looking for something heartwarming and nice! :)
