K-Drama Review: Ms. Ma, Nemisis

Hey guys, so I recently came across this 2018 drama, Ms. Ma, Nemisis by chance and I really enjoyed watching this drama! Unlike your usual Korean revenge and mystery dramas, this drama is different as it is not only based on the novel series "Miss Marple" by the famous crime and mystery writer Agatha Christie, but this drama also has a really unique style of directing and an incredibly unpredictable plot!

Ms. Ma, Nemisis is a 16-episodes SBS drama starring Kim Yunjin, Jung Woong In, Ko Sung Hee, Choi Kwang Je and many more veteran actors and actresses.

The story is about a woman (potrayed by actress Kim Yunjin) who has been falsely accused of murdering her own daughter in what appears to be a kidnapping incident. When all the evidences points to her as the sole suspect and murderer, she is sentenced to life imprisonment where she has been spending her life in prison for almost 9 years. The woman manages to escape from prison one day in order to reveal the truth about her daughter's death and to look for the real murderer.

In order to do so, she takes over the identity of a writer, Ma Ji Won, who is her doppelganger, and moves in to a small village known as Rainbow Village in order to solve her daughter's case. While looking into her daughter's murder, she finds herself solving other murder cases around her that mysteriously begins to occur at Rainbow Village..

With the help of a gangster who lives in the village, Mal Koo (portrayed by actor Choi Kwang Je), and a mysterious girl, Eun Ji (portrayed by actress Ko Sung Hee) who claims to be the niece of Writer Ma Ji Won, they start to work together to solve the murder cases in Rainbow Village while slowly finding leads to solving her daughter's case.

On the other hand, a detective who was in charge of the woman's daughter kidnapping case, Han Tae Kyu (potrayed by actor Jung Woong In) appears and he begins to suspect that the Writer Ma Ji Won is actually the runaway prisoner. At the same time, he begins to grow suspicious about the case that happened years ago.

Thoughts on the drama...

When I first started this drama, I honestly didn't expect the drama to be this good and it definitely exceeded my expectations. Though I am not a fan of mystery/crime/revenge themed drama, I do feel that this drama is under-rated as it was very different from your usual Korean mystery revenge drama, from the directing to the portrayal of the characters as well as interesting story line!

If you're looking for something different that is not too mainstream, this drama is a must watch for you and definitely worth investing 16 hours! I found myself getting more and more intrigued by the clues in each episode. I was also attracted to and drawn to the drama until the very end, which is very rare for mystery dramas as I am not usually a fan! What's interesting about this drama is the fact that it manages to catch your attention by revealing clues here and there but still leave room for doubts which always leave you feeling confused at the end of each episode! Nonetheless, it all somehow adds up to a bigger picture in solving the mystery as the cases she solves along the way at Rainbow Village is somehow related to or have something in common with her daughter's case.

I also really like the unpredictable plot twists and it was refreshing to see a non-main stream murderer (p.s. you'll get what I mean when you find out who!) in dramas! Though I was satisfied with the ending, I found it abit vague in terms of how the writer just solved everything one shot within the second half of the last episode. But was definitely interesting to see that everything comes to a balance especially when the detective helped Ms Ma to get rid of the murderer in such a refreshing way to be honest!

All in all, a highly recommended drama if you're looking for a really good mystery and revenge drama that is refreshing and different! I really enjoyed watching the acting of Kim Yunjin in portraying the character of Ma Ji Won as she somehow manages to make her character different but in a good way! I also really enjoyed watching the dynamic and chemistry between Ma Ji Won and the residents at Rainbow Village, including the Mal Go and Eun Ji! It was also heartwarming in the end where she ended up gaining new family members along the way and develop new relationships even though she had escaped prison in the first place with only one aim which is to find her daughter's real murderer.

Love,
