K-Drama Review: The Master's Sun

Hey guys! So The Master's Sun came to its finale a few weeks ago, ending at 17 episodes, with an extension of 1 episode to their originally planned 16 episodes. All the thrill, fun and enjoyment of this drama has officially come to an end. I am really going to miss watching this drama! This has officially been one of the best dramas of 2013, and has topped my favorite Korean drama list.

Here's a brief description of the synopsis of the drama:

Joo Joong Won, portrayed by So Ji Sub,  is the CEO of a shopping mall chain, which is the Empire Group. He is a self-centered, ambitious and money-minded person. He calculates every relationship he has and relates them to money. Traumatized from a kidnapping incident when he was younger, he does not trust people easily and has dyslexic as a result of the incident. He was betrayed by his first love, Cha Hee Joo, who was involved in his kidnapping incident. However, she died in a fire that exploded in the car she was in, right in front of Joong Won's eye, during the kidnapping incident. From that day on, Joong Won became a very cold and calculating person, as a result of being hurt by the wounds of his first love.

Tae Gong Shil, portrayed by Gong Hyo Jin, is a woman who can see ghosts, after she had an accident years ago. She used to be a very bright and popular girl, and thus given the nickname of "big taeyang", which literally means the big sun. Aftter the accident, she gain the ability to see ghosts. Since then, she has been having insomnia, and has difficulty sleeping at night because of her ability to see ghosts. And she became lonely and doesn't have much friends, as people around her thinks of her as a weird person who suddenly shouts and run away for no reason. But the truth is that she always get scared every time a ghost pops out in front of her.

Not until one day, when she met Joo Joong Won by fate, at the roadside on a rainy night, after returning from doing a favor for a grandmother ghost. Joong Won's car stopped along the roadside, and she got into Joong Won's car, asking for a ride back to the city. At first he refuses, but had no choice but to let her in. Suddenly, a ghost appeared in front of her and she started shouting. Because of this, they decided to stop over at a bus station. Tae Gong Shil accidentally touched Joong Won, when she got scared after seeing a ghost at the bus station, and the ghost mysteriously disappears. From that day on, Joong Won became her hideaway, where she hides whenever she's afraid of the ghosts that she can see. This is because every time she touches Joo Joong Won's body, the ghosts that she can see disappears right away.

After a series of events that happened, Joong Won finally believes Tae Gong Shil's ability to see ghosts. Joo Joong Won then decides to hire Tae Gong Shil as his "radar", in order to investigate his kidnapping case that happened years ago, by using her ability to see and communicate with his first love, Cha Hee Joo. This is because when he was kidnapped, the kidnapper asked for his mother's jewelry as the ransom, but the jewelry is still no where to be found. Joong Won then learns to slowly trust Gong Shil. Even though he cannot see the ghosts, but her learns to trust and follow Gong Shil's words. Joo Joong Won, the cold and self-centered CEO, begins to fall in love with the quirky Tae Gong Shil. He began to see changes in himself in the process.

Seo In Guk, on the other hand, plays the head of the security at the Empire Shopping Mall, Kang Woo. He moved into the same building where Gong Shil is living, and they became neighbors. Tae Gong Shil finds herself liking Kang Woo, but later finds out that he was actually investigating about the people surrounding Joong Won, including Gong Shil. Kang Woo was actually a spy undercover working for Joong Won's father. She found out that Kang Woo was just pretending to like her to get more information. But later on, Kang Woo finds himself falling in love with Gong Shil. Tae Yi Ryung, portrayed by Kim Yoo Ri, is a popular actress, who was Gong Shil's ex-classmate back in high school. She was given the nickname of " Small Taeyang", which literally means the small sun, while Gong Shil was the big sun. She is in love with Kang Woo, and becomes jealous after finding out that the woman that Kang Woo likes was actually Tae Gong Shil. And thus, the love triangle, or you could call it a foursome love rectangle forms between the four main leads of this drama.

PROS:

1. The main character Joo Joong Won, portrayed by So Ji Sub, is a cold yet charismatic character. His unique gesture throughout the drama is really funny and memorable. One of the most memorable gesture would be the "get lost" gesture by Joo Joong Won.  I have watched a few of So Ji Sub's drama in the past, but the character of Joo Joong Won in this drama shows a totally different side of So Ji Sub. So Ji Sub's drama in the past have always been a melodrama. And thus, this drama is definitely something new and refreshing to watch if you are a fan of So Ji Sub! :)

2. The chemistry between So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin is amazing! The chemistry between our two main leads is indeed sizzling good! Gong Hyo Jin was in the drama The Greatest Love a few years back, where she paired up with actor Cha Seung Won. This year, she paired up with So Ji Sub in this drama and  I would say that their pairing in this drama matches really well, in terms of their visuals as well as height.

3. This drama has indeed been a roller coaster ride, with so many ups and downs, unexpected turns and stops throughout the drama. The plot of the drama is really unique, as it combines both horror and comedy, in a different but interesting way. I would say that the flow of the plot of this drama was very well planned and well written. The drama starts off with the horror theme, which slowly develops into a comical yet meaningful story. The mystery of the drama also gets more and more interesting as the story develops further. If you enjoy mystery, thrill, horror and comedy all in one drama, then I would definitely recommend this drama!

4. The drama's ost is daebak! I always enjoy listening to the original soundtracks of Korean dramas. And this drama is no exception! The list of popular singer that participates in this drama's ost includes Gummy, Yoon Mi Rae, Hyorin from SISTAR and many more. The melody and the music will definitely keep your day busy!

5. Last but not least, the acting of the actors and actresses of the drama. I would say that both So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin  has done a great job in their acting. Gong Hyo Jin is one of the actresses who can manage to pull off portraying a character in a comedy drama in a very unique way. And also not forgeting the supporting cast such as Seo In Guk and Kim Yoo Ri, who did a great job as well.

CONS:

1. The extension of the drama. This drama was initially a 16 episode drama, but they decided to extend the drama by 1 episode, making it a 17 episode drama. I feel that the last episode was a bit draggy in the middle of the episode. It got a bit boring towards the end, but the ending was good. The drama ended well, solving all the unsolved mystery of the drama. I would say that the ending of the drama satisfied many fans and viewers of this drama! :)

2. The theme of the drama. At the beginning of the drama, it started out with the horror theme. It was scary and creepy at the beginning with the ghosts appearing in the drama. But later on, it develop into a less scary, but more comical theme. I feel that towards the end of the drama, it kinda lost its horror theme of the drama. And the theme of the drama wasn't balance as the drama was coming to its end. But all in all, this drama has managed to convey an important message to the viewers about life.

RATINGS:

FUN FACTS:

1. Did you know The Master's Sun is the latest drama written by the Hong Sisters? The Hong Sisters has written a number of popular korean dramas, which includes My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, The Greatest Love, My Girl and many other korean dramas.

2. This drama was initially a 16 episode drama, but they decided to extend the drama by one more episode, making it a 17 episode drama.
