T-Drama Review: Breeze By The Sea

Hey guys, it has been a super long time since I last watched a Taiwanese drama and I really enjoyed watching this 2024 drama called 'Breeze by the Sea' starring Chen Bolin, Puff Kuo, Charles Lin and Cecelia Choi. When I first came across this drama, I was interested to watch it as it is directed by Peter Ho, who is a famous actor and director, and it also stars veteran actors such as Chen Bolin and Puff Kuo.

This drama is about a famous movie star, Bai Yin Mo (portrayed by Chen Bolin), who is cold and rude, who got into a scandal, and decides to visit a small village 'Kinmen', to get used to the place before starring in a reality show in order to redeem his public image. At the village, Yin Mo meets Li Hai Nuo (portrayed by Puff Kuo), the granddaughter and host of a B&B. Unlike Yin Mo, Hai Nuo is very cheerful and liked by everone at the village. Although Yin Mo was disliked by the villagers when he first arrived, they slowly warmed up to him after getting to know the real him and Yin Mo starts to become kinder as he spends more time with Hai Nuo and her grandmother, as well as the other villagers.

At the same time, Hai Nuo's good friend, Chen Da Wu (portrayed by Charles Lin) whom she grew up together with decided to come back to Kinmen for good, after studying abroad. Da Wu is now a doctor and he aspire to help all the people he loves in the village. Another of Hai Nuo's friend, Xu Man (portrayed by Cecelia Choi), is an artist who left Kinmen when she was in middle school, and she decides to move back to Kinmen to find her lost passion in art.

Thoughts on the Drama...

I would highly recommend watching this drama if you enjoy slice-of-life themed drama that is both meaningful and heartwarming. The first few episodes of the drama was okay but it definitely got better and better as you watch! The acting and chemistry of the cast was really good especially Chen Bolin, Puff Kuo and Hong Hui Fang! There were many touching stories from the interactions between the different characters in the story that teaches you important life lessons which definitely made the drama memorable. In particular, I really liked how Bai Yin Mo was able to get rid of his cold mask and show his true self when he is with Hai Nuo and her grandmother. Although he was disliked by the villagers at first, they slowly warmed up to him after getting to know the real Yin Mo who is actually hiding behind a cold mask to avoid getting hurt. It was also really interesting to see how Yin Mo knew exactly what the problem was whenever a conflict arised between the villagers, and as an outsider, he somehow managed to pinpoint the issue and help them to fix their problems. It was heartbreaking to see how Hai Nuo started to distance herself and shut everyone out after her grandmother passed away. However, due to the unwavering love and support of Yin Mo and the villagers, she slowly learned to accept her grandmother's passing and begin to start living her life like how her grandmother would have wanted her to. She also found her passion and decided to pursue her dreams of becoming an illustrator. As for Yin Mo, he decided to become a director after discovering his profound passion in directing rather than becoming an actor. It was also nice to see the other characters such as Da Wu who decided to come back to Kinmen village to treat the elderly after studying medicine abroad, and also Xu Man, who decided to return to Kinmen village after having lost her inspiration as an artist. All in all, this is a healing drama that is definietly worth a watch with its beautiful cinematography and interesting characters!

Did you know?

1. This is the second collaboration between Chen Bolin and Puff Kuo, they starred in another Taiwanese legal drama called "Big and Mighty" in 2022.

2. This drama is a remake of a 2018 Korean drama "Top Star Yoo Baek", I have not watched the Korean version but I definitely enjoyed the Taiwanese version.
