Chinese Movie Review: A Wedding Invitation

Hey guys, so I watched this movie called A Wedding Invitation starring Eddie Pan and Bai Bai He a couple of weeks ago. This is a collaboration movie between China and Korea, and is directed by a Korean director. And I have to say that it was a really good movie about a heartwarming and meaningful love story. So I've decided to write my first movie review on this movie! :)

The story begins with Li Xing and Qiao Qiao, who started dating since they were in high school. They continued to date after their graduation until one day, where Qiao Qiao insisted that she wanted to take a break from their relationship. They decided to sign a contract and break up. The contract states that if the both of them are still single after 5 years, they will have to get married to each other.

Five years later, the contract is coming to an end. One day, Qiao Qiao received a phone call from Li Xing, She had always thought that Li Xing will be waiting for her, but not until he told her that he will be getting married in 6 months. Upon hearing this shocking news, Qiao Qiao decided to visit Li Xing at Beijing. Li Xing is now a famous chef and is getting married to a rich heiress. Li Xing then brought Qiao Qiao along while he and his fiance made preparations for their wedding. This made Qiao Qiao jealous and angry. She then realized that she was still in love with Li Xing and decided to try and win him back.

However, after several attempts, Qiao Qiao realized that it was too late to get back together and decided to head back to Shanghai. Li Xing and Qiao Qiao decided to have a last dinner together, where Li Xing revealed that this was all a plan in order to get back together with Qiao Qiao. He then proposes to Qiao Qiao at a cafe that they always go to. Qiao Qiao asked Li Xing to give her time to decide whether to accept his proposal. She was overjoyed, however, Qiao Qiao was diagnosed with cancer 5 years ago when she left Li Xing. She found out that her cancer had come back and she is now in the third stage. Thus, she decided to decline his proposal in order to protect him from getting hurt.

Li Xing finally found out about the truth and was saddened by the fact that Qiao Qiao had hid her sickness from him. During the finale of his cooking competition, he made the homemade soup that he cooked for her in the past and proposed to her. Finally, she decides to accept his proposal and they both got married. They decided to spend their last days together and Li Xing finally understands the true meaning of love.

PROS:

1. The story line and the flow of the movie is really good. It doesn't feel draggy and instead the parts in the movie sums up to the whole story at the end. This movie tells a heartwarming love story which depicts the true meaning of love. But I liked about this movie is also the lighthearted and comedy during the first half of the movie, instead of a full melo-theme throughout the movie.  I was able to learn about important life lessons through this drama and I would really recommend this movie!

2. This movie is a major tear-jerker, especially towards the later parts of the movie. I didn't expect this movie to be a tear-jerker as the movie started off with a somewhat light and cheerful theme. Be sure to keep some Kleenex with you when you're watching this movie! You'll definitely need them during the later parts of this movie.

3. The acting of both Bai Bai He and Eddie Pan was really good as well! I've never watched Eddie Pan's movie before and this is the very first movie. His acting skills were really good and I was amazed by his acting. The actress, Bai He is also a really good actress and she managed to portray her character in the movie really well.

CONS:

1. One of the downside of this movie I would say would be the ending of the drama. Although it was quite predictable that Qiao Qiao would die in the end, but I still hoped that there would be an unexpected miracle. However, on the bright side, I was happy that it was somewhat a happy ending, in the sense where Li Xing kept his promise to Qiao Qiao by making sure he continues living on happily even without her.

2. I felt that the beginning part of the movie was a bit boring. The movie only started becoming interesting during the second half. I feel that the climax of the movie-where it was revealed that Qiao Qiao was currently in her last stage of cancer-came about a little too late in the movie. As a result, we weren't able to see the everyday life of the happily wedded couple.
