K-Drama Review: Plus Nine Boys

Hey guys, I just finished watching this new TvN drama called Plus Nine Boys 아홉수 소년. Plus Nine Boys is a 14-episodes TvN drama starring Kim Young Gwang, Kyung Soo Jin, Oh Jung Se, Yoo Da In and many more other supporting casts.

This drama revolves around a family of 3 boys and their uncle whose age this year is ending with a 9. Starting with the maknae in the family, Dong Goo who is 9 years old this year; the second youngest in the family, Min Goo, who is 19 years old; the eldest Jin Goo who is 29 years old; and lastly their uncle, Gwang Soo who is 39 years old this year.

The mother of the 3 brothers strongly believes in superstition and goes to see a famous fortune teller in the first episode of the drama. The fortune teller told her that because of age which is ending with 9 for all the members of the Kang family, the 3 brothers and their uncle will suffer from bad luck this whole year. Thus, the story begins to unfold as it tells the effect of the age ending with 9 for these 3 brothers and uncle of the Kang family.

Kang Jin Goo, portrayed by actor Kim Young Gwang, plays the eldest brother in the Kang family who is 29 years old this year. Jin Goo is seen and described by his colleagues as being a playboy. He used to be playboy, but now he has a one-sided crush on his best friend, Ma Se Young, portrayed by actress Kyung Soo Jin. He now regrets his playboy times back in the days because Se Young does not like Jin Goo because of his playboy image. However, she only treats him like a best friend. On the other hand, another of their colleague, Jae Bum also has a one-sided love on Se Young. Thus, the love triangle between these 3 best friends begins to unfold at the office where all 3 of them are working at.

Kang Min Goo, portrayed by newcomer actor Yook Sung Jae, plays the second brother in the Kang family. He is 19 years old this year and is a high school se nior. Min Goo is a judo athlete at his high school. One of his dreams is to be able to get a judo scholarship when he graduates from high school. He always see this mysterious girl when he is on the bus and also when he crosses the road. He then believes that it is fate and that they are meant to be with each other. However, what Min Goo doesn't know is that the girl is actually a college student who is totally different from the image that she portrays herself as.

Kang Dong Goo, portrayed by actor plays the maknae in the family who is 9 years old this year. Dong Goo is a child actor who used to be popular. However, because of the 9 myth of the Kang family, his acting career is suffering from a downfall as people regard him as the child actor who used to be cute but not anymore.

Last but not least, Kang Gwang Soo, portrayed by actor, plays the bachelor uncle who is 39 years old this year. He works as a PD producer at a broadcasting station. He is in his late thirties but is still single. He have had a number of relationships in the past, but have not found the right one yet. He then meets one of his ex-girlfriend, Da In, portrayed by actress Yoo Da In. However, Da In is now a single mother who is divorced. Will he be able to find love with his ex-girlfriend who suddenly dumped him on the day he proposed to her at a cinema many years back??

PROS:

 1. The theme of this drama is quite interesting and different from other dramas. The plus nine theme is quite intriguing in the beginning parts of the drama. The development of the theme is also notable in the first few episodes of the drama. Thumbs up to the writer and director in being able to bring out the plus 9 theory in beginning of this drama!

2. I feel that this drama is an okay drama overall. The first few episodes of the drama was pretty interesting with the plot introducing each family members of the Kang family whose age this year is ending with 9. The writer also describes how the 9 theory affects the luck of each member which relates to each unlucky incident or downfall that the Kang family members experienced.

3. The chemistry between Jin Goo and Se Young is great! They were both cast in a music video prior to filming this drama and I think that because of that, their chemistry was great even from the 1st episode of this drama. Despite their height difference, they make a unique and cute couple which makes the viewer interested in watching this drama until the end to see whether they would end up with a happy ending or not. I feel that the other pairings in this drama are also good overall.

CONS:

1. I feel that this drama, like most other dramas, got a bit draggy towards the ending of the drama. The plot was getting more intense and interesting where Jin Goo was in the middle of a love triangle with his colleague, Jae Bum and Se Young, and also for his unrequited crush towards Se Young. However, after the plot started picking up from there, and where Se Young and Jin Goo became a couple, the momentum of the drama decreased and that's what made it seemed a bit draggy towards the ending.

2. This drama ended with 14 episodes altogether. I felt that it is kinda weird for Korean dramas to end with 14 episodes because most of them have either 16 or 20 episodes.
